The painting depicts a friend of Van Gogh's from his Arles period, postal clerk Joseph Roulin. The portrait shows Roulin in a blue uniform, his cap bearing "POSTES," the emblem of the postal service, and his heavy beard giving him an air of dignified gravity. The background is a decorative green wallpaper patterned with pink flowers. Expressive brushwork and vibrant colors convey, in the best manner possible, the vitality of the friend's features.
