About

Description

Title:Wheat Field with Cypresses
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (March 30, 1853 - July 29, 1890)
Date of creation: 1889
Style: Post-Impressionism
Genre: Landscape
Material: oil on canvas
Actual size: 73 cm x 93.4 cm
Location: United States - New York - The Metropolitan Museum of Art

In a letter to his brother, Van Gogh describes his latest work in the June series, which he and his brother described as "the most beautiful of all summers," with ears of wheat, cypresses, a blue sky, and a colorful jigsaw puzzle.

Van Gogh was restless at the time, and his brushstrokes became more and more curled and grotesque. Like many landscapes of the period, this one is completely devoid of straight lines; all the objects are curling, springing, and spitting, as if the author were trying to express his own inner agitation and restlessness.

In this painting, the cypress trees beside the road look like black flames, the curling lines twisting and turning toward the sky. Next to the cypress trees is a dazzling golden wheat field, Van Gogh's favorite color, because it is the color of the sun, a symbol of life.

Van Gogh once wrote: "The cypress tree is always in my mind, and I would like to paint it like a sunflower. But strangely enough, no one paints it as I see it. The lines and proportions of the cypress are truly beautiful, like an Egyptian courtesan."

The theme it expresses is life and strength, full of overwhelming excitement and enthusiasm.
